Check your registration status, INEC tells voters

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Thursday in Abuja advised registered voters in 10 states on what they needed to do to ascertain their registration status.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Kayode Idowu, the commission advised them to visit the polling units where they previously registered to ascertain their status.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the voters are those in the 10 states under Phase One distribution of Permanent Voter Cards.

The statement said the advice was important as the PVCs distribution would hold from Friday, May 23 to Sunday, May 25.

It listed the concerned states as Taraba, Gombe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Benue, Kogi, Abia, Enugu, Akwa-Ibom and Bayelsa.

“Persons whose data have been appropriately captured will be handed their PVCs at the polling units in accordance with set procedures.

“Those with defective data, for whom PVCs have not been produced, will have the opportunity to re-register during the Continuous Voter Registration, which holds from May 28 to June 1,” the statement said.

It said that there would be a display of the valid register of voters at the polling units where the PVCs would be distributed.

“It is, thus, important for every voter to visit his/her polling unit within the time frame to ascertain his/her registration status.

“This is contrary to suggestions that persons in so-called ‘zero polling units’ need not show up,” the statement said.

It added that the CVR was for the categories of persons who turned 18 years after the last registration.

“It is also for persons who were 18 years at the time but did not present themselves for registration.

“Furthermore, the CRV is also for persons whose data were not adequately captured previously and for whom PVCs had not been produced,” the statement said.

It however cautioned that the exercise was not for everyone, including people wishing to transfer their registration data from where they previously registered.

“Those persons whose data were not adequately captured previously and those whom PVCs had not been produced should be calm and re-present themselves for registration during the CVR, to have their status regularised,” the statement said.
