A magnitude-7.8 earthquake, the worst quake to have ever hit the Himalayan nation in over 80 years, shook Nepal's capital and the densely populated Kathmandu Valley today.

Rescue teams have reached the area and are searching for survivors. A police spokesman said the death toll has reached 449.

The injured were being treated outside hospitals in chaotic scenes. Residents, terrorized by a series of strong aftershocks, huddled outdoors as historic buildings in Kathmandu lay in rubble on the ground. Photos continue after the cut.
