"Lawyers must go for English language lessons" - Acting Chief Judge

Friday, April 17, 2015

Acting Chief Judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Justice Ishaq Bello has advocated for continuous education for lawyers, particularly in the use of English language.

Bello stated this on Wednesday in Abuja at the launch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) stamp and affinity products.

The Acting Chief Judge said that it was becoming rather irritating for lawyers to appear before a judge and continuously mix up their tenses in trying to present their cases.

He observed that the declining standard of lawyers could be noticed in the quality of legal practice, where a lawyer stands from the bar saying “I didn’t did it” or “I saw them passes”.

He urged the leadership of the NBA to do more to further encourage the continued education of lawyers, saying the trend was becoming quite irritating.

“All lawyers must go through what is called Language Usage Course (LUC); all lawyers must be exposed to the dynamics of global evolving legal landscape,” he said.

It was a black Friday for staff and students of Rivers State University of Science and Technology as armed robbers attacked UBA on one of their campuses. The attack which lasted for about 30 minutes had the robbers carting away with huge amount of money.

Eyewitnesses said the robbers had followed the bullion van to one of the banks at the RSUST campus and attacked it immediately the cash was being offloaded.  A crowd of people who were at the entrance of the bank where the bullion van was parked scampered away for safety in the midst of the gun shots.

According to another eyewitness, “The armed robbers were fearless. They entered RSUST, went straight to the bullion van and opened fire. One person was killed instantly while five persons that were injured were rushed to the hospital.

“It is shocking that armed robbers can operate successfully inside the campus and go scot-free. What we are talking about happened around 3:30pm. They came in through the main gate and left through the back gate of the university. The bank locked their customers inside during the attack.”
It was further gathered that policemen stopped the robbers outside the university premises. The robbers engaged in a fierce gun battle with the police as they drove through Iloabuchi and Nsukka street in Mile One area of Port Harcourt while trying to escape.

Mass failure at Nigerian Law School as over 3,000 students fail bar exam

Saturday, October 18, 2014

Apparently there was mass failure at the Nigerian Law School this year. The Nigerian Law School recently released the 2013/2014 August result, and it was a Tsunami. Out of the 5,000 candidates who registered, only about 2,000 passed. Meaning that about 3,000 students failed the bar exam, the highest failure the Nigerian Law School has witnessed since its 50 years of existence.

Many of the students are angry and frustrated. They say they don’t believe the mass failure is the fault of the students and are now asking for a review of their results. An affected student who reached out to Linda Ikeji said

“People have worked their b*tt off for this exam, people have ran literally mad for this exam, these same people have invested their life savings for this exam, people who lost their parents prior to this exam had to muster the strength to write this exam and the Director general of the Nigerian lawschool who is responsible for the this mass failure doesn’t see reasons with these people. He said he’s raising a standard but all we see is a high standard of failure!”

Another student said

“Do we say 3000 students payed N300,000 not counting expenses for a year, feeding, books, then prepared to fail? We are calling for a review”

'We must not forget' - Alicia Keys on missing Chibok girls

Sunday, October 12, 2014

Yesterday, the Bring Back Our Girls group held a candle light procession in Abuja in honour of the abducted Chibok girls who have been away for 180days. Alicia Keys who was on CNN had this to say...
'Putting the spotlight on these girls is very, very important to me and I thought that it is my job to help shine the light on what is going on and show people: this is still happening and we must not forget and it is going on for six months.
Six months and nobody is back and the girls are just there because of the need of education and they are abducted? So that is why we must say that we are not allowing this to dissipate, no, we are going to continue to say we are not standing for this, it is not okay.'
