The Emir of Kano, Mallam Lamido Sanusi reportedly swallowed his pride and begged President Goodluck Jonathan to enable him leave the government house and ascend the throne at the Emir’s palace.
Sanusi had been shacked up in a room at the Kano State Government House whilst police barricaded the Emir’s palace shortly after his appointment as Emir last weekend.
The official reason the police were stationed there was to prevent irate youth and looters from having access to the palace, since the news of Sanusi’s selection by Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso caused a lot of disaffection in the state.
However unofficially it was rumoured that President Jonathan sought to have Lamido Sanusi arrested due to alleged overwhelming evidence of fraud and other sharp practices against him during his tenure as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Popular and reliable news source say it was the strength of the case against him that made the new Emir bow to President Goodluck Jonathan, and beg for forgiveness. Reportedly a source said, “Sanusi told the President he was sorry for anything he might have done wrong in the past and asked the President to consider him henceforth as a friend.”
Powerful intermediaries had lobbied on his behalf before the President even agreed to speak with him, Minister of Defence, Aliyu Gusau pleaded on his behalf.
As at latest report yesterday, the police had been withdrawn from the palace and the new Emir allowed to move in.
