Pastor Chris Oyakhilome removed as Trustee of Christ Embassy, U.K. branch

Sunday, October 05, 2014

According to an exclusive report on PremiumTimes, Mr. Oyakhilome is no longer a trustee of the United Kingdom’s branch of the church.

With Mr. Oyakhilome’s removal, his wife, Anita, now presides over a seven-man Board of Trustees of the N8.2 billion rich branch, church documents reviewed by PREMIUM TIMES have shown. The six other members of the board are:

  • Obi Chiemeka,
  • Ifeoma Onubogu,
  • Nkem Odiakah,
  • Raymond Okocha,
  • Tony Obi and
  • Uche Onubogu, all pastors believed to be loyal to Mrs. Oyakhilome.
Mrs. Oyakhilome has for long headed the U.K branch of the church but her husband, before what appears his sudden removal, had since inception presided over the Board of Trustees of the charity.
The new development suggests that in addition to the matrimonial squabble the couples are having, an intense power struggle and battle for the soul of the U.K. branch of the church might be going on between the estranged lovers and partners as well.

In fact, Mr. Oyakhilome had dropped the first hint that there might be a hierarchical row in the church when he reportedly accused his wife of acting like an equal and wanting to overpower the authorities of the elders she met in the church.

PREMIUM TIMES’ review of documents filed by the church’s UK branch to the Charity Commission of England and Wales has now shown that Mr. Oyakhilome is no longer a registered trustee of a branch of his church with total asset worth over N8.2 billion (£31 million). Until he was recently abruptly removed, Mr. Oyakhilome was consistently listed as a prominent trustee since 1996, when the branch was established.

Contrary to the church’s practice of stating reasons for removal of trustees in the past, no reason has been given for the removal of Pastor Oyakhilome. It is unclear whether explanation for the action would be given in the church’s annual report for 2013 which is yet to made public by the charity commission.

According to the church’s financial statement, in 2009, five pastors were removed from the church’s board of trustees after they resigned from their positions and two others were appointed. A Charity Commission spokesperson, Sarah Hitchings, told PREMIUM TIMES that it was not the concern of the commission to know why charities remove or replace their trustees.

The international office of Christ Embassy refused to respond to questions this newspaper sent through email neither did the international audit and accounting firm, Mazars, appointed by the Charity Commission to run the affairs of the church after it opened statutory inquiry into the finances of the church following suspicious payment it made to connected parties worth N941 million between 2008 and 2012.

However, church insiders said the removal of the pastor was a plot by his wife to take total control of the affairs of the branch even as her relationship with her husband of two decades deteriorates. With his ouster, those who should know said Mr. Oyakhilome has lost the locus to interfere in the affairs of that branch of the church.

“He has been effectively sidelined,” a church insider said. “The law in the U.K. does not recognise him as an interested party in that branch of the church anymore.”

Anita herself loses control

But even the seven-man board led by Mrs. Oyakhilome has itself lost control of the affairs of the church.  On August 11, the U.K. charity commission effectively sidelined her board and appointed an interim manager to take over the management of the church.

In what it described as a “temporary and protective measure,” the commission appointed Rod Weston of the international audit and accounting firm, Mazars, to take over the running of the church.
The Commission says it is investigating the church over “a number of serious concerns relating to the use of charitable funds, in particular large connected party payments and the potential misapplication of grant funding.”

Until investigation is concluded, Mr. Weston would preside “over the management of the charity, including its staff, assets, interests, and relations with third parties,” the commission said. He is also expected to discharge the functions of the church’s trustees and take steps necessary to secure and take control of the assets of the church.

The commission however added that the activities of the church would not be suspended by the appointment as the Interim Manager is expected to work with the pastors of the church to ensure its religious and charity activities continue as before.

South Africa's gay mosque gutted by fire

Saturday, October 04, 2014

South Africa's controversial first gay-friendly mosque, which also allows Christian worshippers and women to lead prayers, was damaged by a fire overnight, its founder and the police said Saturday.

And right now, police have opened an arson inquiry into the fire which occurred shortly after midnight and damaged the front door of the mosque in Cape Town. There were no injuries and no arrests have yet been made. The founder, Muslim academic Taj Hargey told AFP:

"This is a deliberate arson attack. They used petrol and oil," he said adding close circuit television video footage showed that unidentified people had made several reconnaissance trips to the mosque two hours before the attack.
Taj blamed his opponents for the attack which occurred on the eve of the celebration of the Muslim feast of Eid al-Adha.
"Instead of preparing for the holy day these people were preparing to destroy the house of God ... it's very sad, disrespectful," he said.
But Hargey remains defiant.
"They cannot shut us down, they can try whatever they want," he said. "They have tried verbal intimidation, threats and now arson, this should be the last. Our opponents should know that they don't have a copyright on Islam."
Andre Traut, police spokesman for the city, said they "are investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire".

The mosque, which welcomes gay people, Christians, and treats men and women equally, opened peacefully in Cape Town last month amid opposition and threats of violence.

Nigerian Military doubts nan in Boko Haram video is missing pilot of the missing jet

Yesterday, a video was released by Boko Haram, in which they beheaded a man they said was the pilot of the missing fighter Jet. The military has doubts that the man killed was actually one of the pilots.

Asked directly about whether the man was an Air Force pilot, as claimed, spokesman Air Commodore Dele Alonge told AFP:
“The man shown in the Boko Haram video is not our officer. The picture of a man beheaded in the video is superimposed,” he said without elaborating. “Our plane is still missing and we are looking for it. Boko Haram is just making unfounded claims.”
A military source also told the Nation...
“Experts are doing forensic analysis of Boko Haram to ascertain whether it was a make-believe or there were really encounters between the pilots and the insurgents. The alleged claim of beheading of the pilot was part of the video clip purportedly released by Boko Haram on Thursday.
We are in receipt of the ‘gory’ clip. We are studying every bit of it in line with military ethics. Do not forget that there might also be an element of propaganda on the part of the insurgents. The video clip has a tint of psychological warfare, but the military is undaunted. The report on the last minutes of the pilots indicated that they had completed their assignment.
They had their last successful assignment in seized areas in Adamawa State. Something was wrong while returning to base. This is what we are looking at. So, they had a successful outing on that day. This is why the military had considered the likelihood of the jet being shot by Boko Haram as ‘remote.’ These pilots were among the best in the Air Force; they were always willing to go to the war front even when others were a bit sceptical of the weather or mode of operation. They were thorns in the flesh of the insurgents and they accounted for many successful air strikes we have recorded.
We have retrieved communication data to know whether the plane got missing because of mechanical challenge or otherwise.”

PDP chieftain bags life imprisonment for raping pregnant APC woman

Obafemi Kolawole, a political associate to Chief Ganiyu Oladiran, a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain in Ilesa, was on 23 September 2014 convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with whipping for rape.

According to PMNews, the said Obafemi was alleged to have on 15th September 2007 raped an Action Congress of Nigeria (now All Progressives Congress) member (Tosin Ajakaye, who was pregnant as at the time of the incident) after the 2007 gubernatorial election in Osun state. Kolawole was charged before the State High Court sitting at Ilesa, on a two-count charge of rape and indecent assault contrary to Sections 358&360 of the Criminal Code cap 34, Vol II, Laws of Osun respectively in the case of The State Vs Obafemi Kolawole HIL\2c\2009.

The prosecution called a total of four witnesses including Tosin Ajakaye, Lawal Sikiru, Dr. A.I Isawumi and the Investigating police officer Sgt Olatunji Arojo in proof of its case, while Obafemi testified in his defence and called additional four witnesses including Chief Ganiyu Oladiran, Adediran Kehinde, Adewusi Olowolodu and Olayinka Alege.

At the trial, the prosecutor narrated her ordeal that on 15th September, 2007, the convict and his cohorts, who are not police officers came to arrest her at her house at about 7:30 p.m. for an unknown offence. On sighting them and knowing their antecedent in the vicinity, she took to her heels. The convict pursued, caught up with her and beat her up. Having overpowered her, he stripped her naked and raped her.

“When my cry for help became unbearable, he covered my mouth. Unfortunately, those living in the same compound with me had gone to Mosque because it was the period of the Muslim fast. Thereafter he bundled me into a waiting jeep to join two other men whom I found in the same predicament as mine,” she said.

She later explained that they were driven to the home of Chief Ganiyu Oladiran, a PDP chieftain, and tied to a tree where the trios were mercilessly flogged. She said Kolawole later untied her and plucked out her pubic hair, put it in her mouth to swallow with dry gin, and thereafter went ahead to insert a tin opener into her vagina and as well poured dry gin all over her body. There he raped her again.

Lawal Sikiru who testified as ‘prosecutor witness 2′ corroborated her story. He said he was one of the two naked men in the waiting jeep; the other was one Gbadamosi Lasun. He stated further that he had earlier on received his own share of beating, and bundled naked into the jeep belonging to Chief Ganiyu Oladiran when Ajakaye was brought in naked. He confirmed that the trio were driven to Chief Ganiyu’s house and tied to a tree where they were mercilessly beaten and the content of dry gin was poured all over their body.

According to him, Ajakaye was untied by the accused who plucked out her pubic hair, inserted a tin opener into her vagina, and as well went ahead to pour dry gin in her (vagina) and then sought the consent of the Chief to have sexual intercourse with her.
The chief consented and she was taken to the boot of the jeep from where they heard her shouting for help.

The Medical examination conducted on Ajakaye three days after the incident at LAUTECH by Dr. Isawumi revealed that there was penetration and that the swap taken from her was full of alcohol. It was also discovered medically, that as at the time of the incident the prosecution was pregnant.
Sgt Arojo the IPO, on his own part, testified that Ajakaye and others were brought to the State Police Command Monitoring Unit at Okefia by Chief Ganiyu Oladiran who claimed that the trio whom he got arrested were the ones who assaulted him after the April 2007 Gubernatorial Election in the State.

According to him, while receiving the statements of all concerned, and conducting investigation into the matter, it was discovered that Chief Ganiyu Oladiran’s captives were indeed the victims, and the supposed complainants and cohorts were the accused persons and were consequently charged to court.

Obafemi Kolawole (the convict) in his own defence, denied the allegations made against him. He admitted going to Ajakaye’s house on the fateful day and arresting her, but denied stripping her naked, rather he handed her over to his colleagues, who drove her and other captives to Chief Ganiyu’s house, where they were later handed over to the police.

His other witnesses also admitted that Ajakaye and others were driven to the Chief’s house. Chief Ganiyu Oladiran, while testifying in defense of the accused claimed his co-accused at the Magistrate Court who arrested the trio were his sympathizers.

The presiding Judge, Honourable Justice A. B. Abdulkareem, while finding the accused guilty as charged, pronounced that although the corroboration of prosecution witness two was limited to assault, it does not corroborate penetration which is the vital ingredient necessary for rape.
However, the medical report tendered by Dr Isawumi corroborated the needed penetration and he thereafter found Kolawole guilty. The learned trial Judge held that the Prosecution Counsel Mrs Rachel Ojimi, a Chief State Counsel, in the Ministry of Justice, has been able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently convicted the accused. He however struck out the charge of indecent assault since it carries a lesser punishment.

The imports of this judgment are as follows:
  •  (a) Our society is still governed by laws and that notwithstanding the fact that you have perceived that some individuals have wronged you does not give you the liberty or license to take laws into your hands and forgetting the maxim ’UBI JUS IBI REMEDIUM’ meaning, where there is a right, there is a concomitant remedy.
  • (b) That our courts are still the last hope of the common man, though justice may be slow yet its long hand will surely catch up with the offender no matter how highly or lowly placed or affiliated to a political party.

New Boko Haram video shows beheading of Nigerian pilot

A new Boko Haram video shows the beheading of a man identified as the pilot of a missing Nigerian Air Force jet and burnt out parts of a plane - the first indication that Nigeria's homegrown Islamic extremist group has the capability to bring down aircraft.

It also allegedly features Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, a man Nigeria's military twice has claimed to kill in 2009 and again last year. Two weeks ago the military said they had killed in battle a Shekau lookalike who had posed in the group's videos.

"Here I am, alive and I will remain alive until the day Allah takes away my
breath," the man says in the Hausa language. "Even if you kill me ... it will not stop us imposing Islamic rule ... We are still in our Islamic state, reigning and teaching the Koran."
The United States still has a $7 million ransom on Shekau's head, despite the death claims.
The video was made available to The Associated Press through the same channels used previously and seems to show the same man claiming to be Shekau.

In the latest video, he says they are prosecuting in accordance with Shariah law in areas under their control. Examples of punishments are shown, including the stoning death of a man apparently accused of adultery; the amputation of the hand of a young man accused of theft; the lashings of a man and what appears to be a girl covered in the hijab. The video ends with a show of burnt out plane parts in rugged bush.

Two pilots and an Alpha jet have been missing since Sept. 11 when it left the northeastern town of Yola on a bombing mission against Boko Haram. The video shows a kneeling man in a camouflage vest with his right hand in a sling, with a fighter hovering over him with an axe, which is later used in the beheading.

Speaking in English, the victim identifies himself as a wing commander in the Nigerian Air Force and says he was undertaking a mission in Kauri area of northeast Borno state on Sept. 11.

"We were shot down and our aircraft crashed," he says, appearing to keep his composure throughout the ordeal. "To this day I don't know the whereabouts of my second pilot."
Shekau claims in the video to have brought down 10 military aircraft. Nigeria's Defense Headquarters has denied speculation that Boko Haram brought down a helicopter gunship that crashed in August. The pilot died, two crew members survived.

Jason Derulo broke up with Jordin Sparks over the phone

According to Toofab.com, during an interview with Power 105.1's DJ Envy, the "Ridin' Solo" singer says that their relationship simply ran its course ... and admits he broke up with Jordin over the phone!
"Every relationship has their ups and downs and you know, when you start having more downs than ups, you gotta take a look at your relationship and be like, 'Is this something that I'm supposed to be doing?'" he said.

When asked how he broke things off, Derulo admitted he did it "over the phone" because he "wasn't in town."

Another American infected with Ebola

Another American has been infected with the Ebola Virus while working in Liberia.
The 33-year-old man, who was not identified by name, was working as a freelance camera operator for NBC News as part of a crew of five that featured the network's top medical reporter Dr. Nancy Snyderman, who has been in Monrovia reporting on the outbreak. That makes the cameraman the fourth American to contract the often-deadly virus in Liberia. Two doctors were in infected in July, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol, and a third, Dr. Rick Sacra, was diagnosed last month.

The cameraman will be flown back to the States for treatment, NBC said. Snyderman and the rest of the crew will also be brought home to the U.S. via private jet. Once they arrive, they will be placed on quarantine and monitored for 21 days. The news comes just two days after the first case of ebola was diagnosed inside the United States.

"New Boko Haram Shekau video is fake" - Nigerian Military

Nigerian Military authorities have dismissed reports that Boko Haram’s leader, Abubakar Shekau or his clone, said to have been killed in Konduga last month by Nigerian troops, is alive.

Shekau had released a video today through AFP saying he is very much alive but in a statement released on their website, Nigerian Military Defence says that's not true. That the video is a pre-recorded version of Shekau’s usual taunts while he was still alive. Here's the statement:

“The Defence Headquarters is studying the claims made in the video purportedly released by the terrorists showing their leader Abubakar Shekau as dismissing his death.  From immediate observation and what some online news outlets claimed to have seen,
the video did not indicate when it was shot neither did it show any proof of life or currency such as screen time or date.  The video also did not make any reference to anything that has happened since the impostor’s reported death.
It is also noteworthy that the air plane said to be mentioned in the video had been missing before he was killed. It should not surprise anybody if the terrorists decide to manipulate pictures, clone another Shekau or upload a pre-recorded video all in a bid to prove invincible.
As far as we are concerned, the individual who was appearing in video and claiming to be the leader of the terrorist group was killed in the Kondunga battle in September.  The resemblance of the corpse and that of the eccentric character was incontrovertible. His identity was equally corroborated by people who knew him before we announced his death.
So, while waiting to see the new video before any further statement,  our message to them is that justice will be served to whoever bears that name or designation and whoever engages in act”

Boko Haram: Abubakar Shekau appears in new video, debunks death claims

Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau has dismissed Nigerian military claims of his death in a new video obtained by AFP on Thursday.

Nigeria's military said last week that Shekau was dead and that a man who had been posing as the group's leader in the videos had been shot dead after fighting with troops in the far northeast. But in the 36 minute video obtained by AFP, Abubakar says he's very much alive and that the militants has implemented strict Islamic law in captured towns.
“Here I am, alive. I will only die the day Allah takes my breath,” Shekau said, adding that his group was “running our… Islamic caliphate” and administering sharia punishments."

Five Nigerian men arrested in Dubai for robbing with toy guns

Thursday, October 02, 2014

The Ajman Police have busted a gang of five Nigerians that robbed the Al Mustaqbal money exchange of  Dhs275,000 (N13million) including various foreign currencies.

According to a Dubai news website, GulfToday, Brigadier Sheikh Sultan Al Nuaimi, deputy Ajman Police chief, said that the incident took place last week when the gang members entered the exchange and attacked and assaulted its employees, threatening them with toy guns before emptying the premises of its cash and fleeing.

The gang members entered the country on a visit visa, which expired long time ago. He added that the police operations room received a call about the robbery at around 10.30 pm last Thursday. However, the suspects managed to escape before the police arrived on the scene, as the employees failed to activate the alarm in order to alert the police.

Lt Col Abdullah Saif Al Matroushi, director-general of CID at Ajman Police, said that police formed a special team to investigate the case.

“The police team used sniffer dogs to trace the movement of the suspects and found the shirt of one of the suspects and a toy gun used in the crime.

The police also used the footage obtained from surveillance cameras installed at the exchange house and the street, which assisted in revealing their car plate number and its description.

In cooperation with the Sharjah and Dubai Police, the team managed to identify the suspects and their location. One of the suspects was arrested in a street in Sharjah. He then led the police team to his accomplices in Dubai. In coordination with the Dubai Police, the team raided the house of the suspect and arrested the other four. The sixth suspect is still on the loose and the police is on the lookout.

Upon inspection of the suspect’s residence, the police seized Dhs11,000, receipts of purchases of gold, garments and various items, as well as money transfer to their countries and currencies including US dollars, euros, Omani riyals and other currencies. The suspects confessed to their crimes and were referred to the Public Prosecution.

Model claims Jason Derulo cheated on Jordin Sparks with her, Jordin to return Jason's BMW gift

Wednesday, October 01, 2014

How shocking! A 30-year-old model named Carmen Ortega has come forward, claiming she had an affair with Jason Derulo while he was still engaged to Jordin Sparks.

Carmen Ortega claims Jason Derulo cheated on Jordin Sparks, who he split with in late September after a three year relationship. She, however, told Star Magazine that she was unaware of Derulo's relationship status and thought he was single during her fling with him.

The 30-year-old beauty told the publication she met the 25-year-old last summer at a Los Angeles
recording studio.

'We dated for a month,' she claimed. 'We went out in public with friends a few times, so I assumed he didn’t have a girlfriend.'
Once she learned that Derulo was dating Sparks, Ortega claims to have taken swift action:
'I cut ties with him immediately. He tried telling me their relationship was strictly fueled by management teams. He lied to me the entire time.'
No one is sure how credible Carmen’s claims are. She has no proof of her relationship with Jason, and she’s made similar claims in the past. According to DailyMail, Ortega claimed in 2009 to have had an affair with Reggie Bush while he was still dating Kim Kardashian.

Meanwhile, Derulo recently said in an interview that he spent three great years with Jordin and that pressure to get married rather than infidelity was the cause of their break-up. On the other hand, Jordin told Wendy Williams that she plans to give back the BMW her ex-fiance Jason Derulo gave her.
